Day 17 – Favorite antagonist

The kind of antagonists in video games changed during the years. At the first place, most of them are obviously evil personalities that have evil genius plans in mind to take over the world. Short before the begin of the new century, a new kind of antagonist joined the gaming world: the betrayals and mind controllers. Antagonists that appeal to the protagonists good side and convictions, trying to use brave souls for their evil plans. Let me tell you first, that I don’t see the antagonist that I used for this article is my most favorite one, but he is one of the kind of antagonist that got the motivations I described above.

I always wonder how it works that a whole society of people can be tricked and manipulated. Sure, we had infamous encounters in human history already, and these personalities tried to use the peoples wish for freedom for their own evil needs.

Al Mualim is one of the antagonist that I like. His motivation is to be the only one that got the knowledge about an ancient myth, a power to control the world and peoples minds. He uses religious believes of his followers to reach his goal. A whole society of brave people that only wish to give their country back the freedom got tricked and manipulated. At first his true motivation seems to be the same as the one of his followers, but in the end a small group of people sees the whole truth and stands unite against his betrayal, while the weak minds among his followers is brainwashed and protects his highness from harm. It is the games protagonist Altair that strikes him down after removing all of the hidden templers, which Al Mualim also belongs to.
